Chorlton has a lot of great homes prime for extension work to create a more contemporary living space, and we were fortunate enough to work on a kitchen extension project in one such house in the area.
The home was a larger 1920s semi-detached 4-bedroom property, and the client wanted something more grandeur with their downstairs space. With our initial consultation, we looked into creating an extension that would make the space lighter, brighter and more spacious, incorporating a traditional shaker-style kitchen.
Planning
The uniqueness of this specific project is that its genesis began before the couple had even purchased the property, allowing our team to view the house whilst the buying process was still going through and measuring up the work to discuss and quote.
With the majority of planning undertaken whilst the purchase was going through the completion process, the family moved into the property whilst we continued to explore and decide on the potential for the space. Our team worked with the homeowners on options of where the kitchen placement would be in the new plans. The owners wanted an open-plan living space at the back, complete with large glazed sliding doors to maximise the views into the rear garden and large roof lights to showcase plenty of natural light. It was an area that our team also felt was a great stylish choice to bring the home into a modern look.
The work required applications to extend further than what was considered the norm for this type of property, which did not quarrel with the planners.
Work
With all decisions agreed on between our team and the homeowners on the design and work involved – and our extensive experience in delivering high-standard results on these types of projects – we began with the process of knocking through the back end of the kitchen and extending out, involving propping up the back of the house to clear the new space required.
The extra space at the rear of the property allowed for a larger entertaining space, as well as a cooking and living area, able to maintain adequate space for the living room without being tight or intrusive. We characterised the area with popular glazed sliding doors at the back and a kitchen island to create separation from the dining area giving it an additional wow factor.
We wanted to give the space additional breathing room so that clutter would not make the room smaller in look. We planned the creation of some large storage areas, as well as a utility room. We incorporated a downstairs toilet, helping to keep things out of the way whilst providing all modern family living requirements.
The focus was on creating an inspiring internal space, using regular materials and plenty of creative ingenuity.
The finished result was a smoothly transformed, stellar and stylish kitchen extension that the customer was truly happy with. We proudly include it within our growing collection of remodelled home projects.
