With all of the various style and scale design projects Cheadle Architects undertake, one type is what we consider our specialist projects – Kitchen extensions to semi-detached properties.
One particular project was in the town of Didsbury, a 3-bedroom 1930s-style semi-detached property desiring a kitchen extension into an open plan space, requiring a remodelling of the back of the home.
Planning
In consultation with the client, the desire was born from them wanting a modern way of living, with a space that both children could occupy and the family feeling closer in their activities around the home. It would also double for when guests come by for social events, allowing for flexibility in the space.
With this being a young family, the need for space and additional storage was essential to the project. Our consultation and discussions focused on where the location of the kitchen and how the extension could provide better practicality.
We crafted the design plan, incorporating the kitchen layout and colour scheme, selecting LVT flooring that would seamlessly flow through the property. Some unique choices included smaller Bifold doors and a large picture-framed window with a lower sill, extended into the room to allow for underneath storage space. It also presented an opportunity to double as a reading corner with cushioning and a view overlooking the garden.
The space created allowed dining and living space to move around as it suited them.
Work
The overall design plan incorporated as much unique storage as possible, ideally suited for a young family with space needs moving forward.
Squaring off the kitchen allowed us to create a deep storage cupboard off the hallway and an ancillary space directly off the kitchen for a pantry/utility room. That enabled storing the washing machine and tumble dryer out of the central kitchen space. We also created a downstairs toilet, perfect for growing families and their needs.
The kitchen area had an existing side window which we decided to retain, allowing additional light to come into the darker section of the room, with a beautiful picture frame window providing plenty of natural light to the space.
Conclusion
Upon completing the extension project, the client was thrilled with how the space turned out for them, loving the calming atmosphere and thoughtfulness going into family living.
The back part of the kitchen now allowed for a bigger family living space, whilst the front room has become their cosy snug area for evenings. It is the perfect young family atmosphere and a specialist area for the Cheadle Architects team.
