At Cheadle Architects, we love the challenge of completely changing the look and functionality of a home without separating it from its surroundings. One project offering that opportunity was introduced by a builder we had worked with on larger builds.
This property is situated in one of Hale’s Green Belt areas, owned by a client who wanted to remodel the house situated within their dream location and setting, with wonderful rural surroundings and garden space. The main problem was that the house didn’t match up to the appeal. With the lady of the house due to give birth and the family set to grow, ideas for their future home were thrown around between our architect team and the homeowners to find a more spacious and practical use, increasing the volume of the property to make it work for a growing family.
Initial stages
The home was a traditional 1970s built in a small cul-de-sac area, with nothing truly astonishing in its original design. The exterior was reclaimed brick with an inside layout that was outdated for today’s living standards.
The hallway was tiny, with a downstairs toilet in an area that was too dark to see anything. We all agreed that this type of stunning location called for something more grandeur, which included removing the downstairs toilet, making the hallway wider and concentrating on a WOW factor for the entrance.
We also agreed that the existing roof needed full stripping to be more reflective of its rural environment, replacing the dated concrete tiles with rosemary tiles.
Transformation
Instead of UPVC windows, we chose hardwood timber framed windows painted sage green, which gave it more of a country feel that worked more with the nature of the area and the client’s taste.
To the side of the property, we mapped out changing the flat roof garage into a pitched roof extension space with more light through the large windows at the front. The front style of the house is to be more visually welcoming, replacing the little flat roof element that jutted out with a more visually pleasing pitched roof extension.
This two-storey extension at the front and side fills the previously dead space, whilst a small extension at the back of the property creates a lot of additional character and detail. The plan called for better use of the existing loft space by transforming it into an extra room. The new two-storey side extension was structured to include a master suite, a gorgeous dressing area, and a boutique en-suite and provides the opportunity to incorporate a gallery landing and increase the size of the other bedrooms – including a new staircase to the loft space and a terrace area.
Considerations
Because of the sensitivity of the Green Belt area, Cheadle Architects worked closely with a planning consultant regarding planning issues to try and best satisfy the requirements of the Trafford Council upon submission.
With this house sitting in a Green Belt location, we could only increase the cubic meterage by 30%. The house remodel project was a backward and forward process, creating a forever home with a layout from scratch, including niceties such as ancillary spaces, large storage areas and extended space in the existing small bedrooms.
The finishing touches of a white-painted pebble dash on the front of the house and the large oak framing on certain sections have radically enhanced the design to fit in with the surrounding area.
